FLOOD STORAGE PONDS

One of the best ways to store water in the landscape is through temporary or permanent open water features such as wader scrapes or ponds. These natural 'Run-off Attenuation Features' or RAF's can be designed so that they store more water during periods of high rainfall, draining down slowly to a more natural water level once floods have passed.

RAF's and ponds can store huge amounts of flood water, as well as having benefits for wildlife, carbon storage and more.

Funding
  • Funding (up to 100%) available dependent on location
  • Assistance can be provided with RAF design and construction
Location
  • The location of RAF's should be carefully considered
  • Assistance can be provided with modelling and mapping to determine the most beneficial location
  • Design should maximise flood water storage capacity and wildlife value
Details
  • A well designed RAF can be extremely beneficial for local biodiversity
  • RAF's can be important 'stepping stones' for wildlife, connecting up freshwater habitats over larger scales
